故事原文：在很久很久以前，有一个贤明而受人爱戴的国王。但是他的年纪已经很大了，而且年迈的国王没有一个孩子。这件事，使他很伤脑筋。有一天，国王想出了一个办法，说：“如果谁能用这些种子培育出最美丽的花朵，那么，那个孩子便是我的继承人。”
所有的孩子都种下了那些花种子，他们从早到晚，浇水、施肥、松土，护理得非常精心。
有个名叫雄日的男孩，他也整天用。心培育花种，但是，十天过去了，半月过去了，一月过去了……花盆里的种子依然如故，不见发芽。
“真奇怪！”雄日有些纳闷。最后，他去问他的母亲：
“妈妈，为什么我种的花不出芽呢？”
“母亲同样为此事操心，她说：“你把花盆里的土换一换，看行不行。”
雄日依照妈妈的意见，在新的土壤里播下了种子，但是它们仍然不发芽。
国王决定观花的日子来到了。无数个穿着漂亮的孩子涌上街头，他们各自捧着盛开着鲜花的花盆，每个人都想成为继承王位的太子。但是，不知为什么，当国王环视花朵，从一个个孩子面前走过去时，他的脸上没有一丝高兴的影子。
忽然，在一个店铺旁，国王看见了正在流泪的雄日，这个孩子端着空花盆站在那里。国王把他叫到自己的跟前，问道：
“你为什么端着空花盆呢?”
雄日抽泣着，他把他如何种花，但花种又长期不萌芽的经过告诉给国王，并说，这可能是报应，因为他在别人的果园里偷摘过一个苹果。
国王听了雄日的回答，高兴地拉着他的双手，大声地说：“这就是我的忠实的儿子！”
“为什么您选择了一个端着空花盆的孩子来继承王位呢？”
于是，国王说：
“子民们，其实我发给你们的花种子都是煮熟了的种子。”
听了国王这句话，那些捧着最美丽的花朵的孩子们，个个面红耳赤，因为他们播下的是另外的花种子。
这个故事一直让我很困惑，为什么国王想找一个诚实的人来继承王位，却用撒谎的方式来考验他们呢？
今天才明白，这个故事是告诉我们：上级可以欺骗下级，下级绝不可以欺骗上级。哪怕你知道上级欺骗了你，你也要假装不知道。
